4 Easy Ways to Protect Our Environment

Saturday, April 22nd, is Earth Day. This holiday is a great reminder that saving the earth is a group effort and we all need to do our part. Here are four EASY ways to protect our environment:

1. Opt for LEDs

We say it all the time, but one of the easiest and most effective ways to save energy is to switch to LED lightbulbs. Incandescent light bulbs use more than 6x the energy that LEDs use and need to be replaced about once each year, which means more energy used, more light bulbs in the trash, and more dollars wasted. So if you still haven’t made the switch to LEDs, now’s the time! If you’re confused or overwhelmed by your options, visit our Lighting Education page for all the information you need.

The average household has more than 50 light bulbs. At a savings of $6.15 per bulb, that’s an annual total of $307.50!

2. Turn Off the Lights

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but one of the easiest ways to save the environment is to turn off the lights when you leave a room. If you don’t usually turn off the lights (or if your kids are always leaving the lights on in their bedroom or playroom), it may take some time to make it a habit. Try leaving a friendly reminder on a brightly-colored sticky note above the light switch. With some practice, it will become second-nature to flip the switch every time you leave a room.

3. Adjust Your Timer

If your outdoor lights are on a timer, April is the perfect month to make adjustments. If you have the timer set for 5pm but notice that the sun is staying out past 7pm, you may want to set your timer for later in the evening. Even pushing it back an hour will save a lot of energy over the spring and summer months.

4. Recycle Old Incandescent Bulbs

As you switch to LEDs, you’ll likely end up with a lot of old incandescent light bulbs. But before tossing them in the trash, consider giving them new life as a holiday ornament. These festive decorations are perfect to display in your own home or give as gifts to friends and family. If you don’t want to save all your old bulbs until the holidays, the Internet has plenty of other craft ideas to upcycle incandescent light bulbs.
